The Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Nikolai Bordyuzha believes that the situation is now stabilizing in Afghanistan. He made the statement commenting on a report about possible expansion of the American air base in Kyrgyzstan when he visited the republic on the 24th of June.
“Currently, stabilization process is underway in Afghanistan and fighting is rolling up and consequently, there is no need for expanding the Manas air base in Kyrgyzstan,” Nikolai Bordyuzha said.
He said that the American air force base is in Kyrgyzstan on temporary basis and with the United Nations mandate only for supporting operations in Afghanistan.
Earlier, commander of the US forces in the region General Jeffrey Schlesser said that Taliban attacks in eastern Afghanistan had increased 40% in the first five months of the year. According to western analysts, the death toll among foreign and Afghan government forces has sharply increased this year.
