Moscow is ready to help promoting the Afghan army’s role in guaranteeing security

Afghanistan.ru - 24.6.2008
Most likely, the Russian Federation will increase the supply of military equipment to Afghanistan. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak told reporters about the move after the Russian-American working group on fighting terrorism ended its meeting.

“Russia supplied military hardware to Afghanistan in the past. It is noticeable that the people of Afghanistan and its government feel a need for taking the issues of guaranteeing security into their own hands. Consequently, Russia is ready to study these needs (in military equipment) to help Afghanistan,” Sergei Kislyak said.

According to the Russian diplomat, Russia supplies military equipment to the armed forces of new Afghanistan to strengthen the country’s defence capacity and to guarantee security.

“Perhaps, I will not hurry now to give details. But the main thing is that an agreement has been reached in principle to this end,” Sergei Kislyak said.

On the 10th of June, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Denisov said that there was a possibility of resuming Russian-Afghan cooperation in military and technical area. According to Afghan mass media, an agreement on the resumption of cooperation in this area was reached during the recent visit to Moscow of the Afghan Foreign Minister R. D. Spanta.
