Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of RF: Security of the regions along the Russian border depends on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
On the eve, the Russia-NATO Council meeting at the level of Chiefs of General Staff ended in Brussels. Prospects for cooperation on Afghanistan were among the bilateral issues discussed at the meeting.
After the meeting, Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov emphasized the significance of the Afghan issues for Russia. “The issue has a direct impact on security in regions near the borders of Russia and worries our allies of the Collective Security Treaty Organization,” he said. “Consequently, we are helping the peacekeepers in Afghanistan by providing, first and foremost, cargo supply routes,” he added.
The participants of the meeting adopted a plan of military cooperation for 2012 and a roadmap of cooperation between Russia and NATO up to 2014, including cooperation in fighting terrorism.
