Russia will not send its servicemen to Afghanistan. Russian President Dmitri Medvedev made this statement speaking at the Brooklyn Institute in Washington. “We have our own history in working in Afghanistan, which is linked to the Soviet period,” said Dmitri Medvedev. According to him, the Russian society is not ready to open “this page of history once again”.
“President Medvedev also described the efforts made by Russia and the international community to counter drug trafficking from Afghanistan. “We are helping Afghans to transform their country into a stable, steadily developing state and guarantee peaceful life and we have established political contacts,” Dmitri Medvedev said. “However, we have done a little to fight against drug trafficking from Afghanistan,” he added.
“Perhaps, the reason here is that America is suffering far less from the drug trafficking from Afghanistan, while Europe and Russia are suffering to a larger extent. This is the flow that comes to Russia,” said the Russian President concerning the possible reasons for passive fight against drug threat coming from Afghanistan.
According to Dmitri Medvedev, the development of the Afghan political and civil systems is the key solution to achieve stability in Afghanistan. According to the Russian leader, Moscow continues to cooperate with the West on “the Afghan issue”.
Meanwhile, Russia as part of a joint project with Germany has delivered two medical helicopters Mi-8 to Afghanistan. Moreover, two fire-fighting machines were also delivered, says “Pravda.ru”.
“We rendered help that is unique in the sense and scale. Afghanistan felt Russia in its every province. We delivered 25 thousands of tons of flour, which was distributed in the provinces. The year ended with the supply of 50 KamAZ lorries to meet the needs of agriculture, says “Pravda. ru” quoting the director of the international affairs department of the Emergency Situations Ministry of the RF, Yuri Brazhnikov.
Notably, flour and lorries have been delivered to Afghanistan since the start of the implementation of the humanitarian project over a year ago.
According to Brazhnikov, last year showed that Afghanistan needs some more assistance.
