Russia allows NATO to transport cargo through its territory
Afghanistan.ru - 16.12.2008
Russia is ready to support coalition forces in Afghanistan and has no plans to refuse them to transport their cargo through its territory. This was stated by Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin at an informal meeting of the representatives from neighbouring countries of Afghanistan in Paris today.
“We are ready to help International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan and have no intention to reject that transit route for supplying non-military cargo to the ISAF passes through the Russian territory,” the diplomat said.
Earlier, reports said that Washington had been holding talks with several countries in the region to open a new route bypassing Russia.
Alexei Borodavkin called on the coalition forces under the NATO command in Afghanistan to fight actively against the production of narcotics and drug trafficking. “We gave recommendations so that our partners could operate in Afghanistan more effectively and assist normalizing the situation in the country purposefully. We believe that ISAF should step up their fight against drug trafficking and drug production in Afghanistan,” he said.
